Hey all, we here at True Shot Academy are going to talk about .350 Legend today. The cartridge was introduced to the market recently and has been growing in popularity since its debut. Our goal today is to provide a brief overview of the cartridge while delving into traits, features, use cases, and other considerations. Without further ado, let’s talk about .350 Legend.
.350 Legend is a centerfire rifle cartridge that made its debut in 2019. The round was introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms and is often abbreviated as .350 LGND. The cartridge is of the straight-walled variety and is classified as an intermediate rifle round. Notably, the round has no parent case but utilizes an identical nominal rim diameter (0.378”) to the .223 Remington.
The .350 Legend’s recoil is notably greater than that of a 5.56x45mm NATO or .223 Remington loading while being tamer than the recoil of a .243 Winchester. The cartridge was purpose-built to have a flatter trajectory and softer recoil impulse than most other straight-walled cartridges. Additionally, the cartridge was designed to be able to dispatch medium to larger-sized game at greater distances of about 200-250 yards. The cartridge is typically available in grain weights which range from 125 grains to 280 grains, providing users with a variety of versatile loadings for hunting and other purposes.
As a straight-walled cartridge, the .350 Legend complies with regulations in multiple states which have restrictions on what firearms can be used for deer hunting. Historically, some states such as Iowa have required deer hunters to utilize slug guns or muzzleloaders for hunting to comply with regulations. Ultimately, .350 Legend was designed to provide hunters, specifically deer hunters, with a viable caliber to take into the field which did not run afoul of any restrictions or regulations.
Winchester specifically designed the .350 Legend to be a potent straight-walled cartridge optimal for hunting use in the modern era. The .350 Legend’s similar dimensions to .223 Remington and status as an intermediate rifle cartridge make it well-suited for use in a wide range of firearms. Notably, the cartridge is designed to function in semi-automatic firearms such as AR-15s due to their common use throughout the country.
The .350 Legend cartridge is an incredibly versatile hunting cartridge for the modern era. The fact that the cartridge was purpose-built to function reliably with a wide range of firearms adds to its versatility. This means that hunters and shooters of all types and tastes can effectively employ the .350 Legend in their endeavors.
Like most cartridges, the .350 Legend is well-suited for use in manual action firearms such as bolt action and single shot rifles. Additionally, the fact that the cartridge is optimized for use in semi-automatic rifle designs, like the AR-15, makes it even more versatile. The cartridge essentially allows an end user to employ an AR-15 in the caliber as an effective modern brush gun. Simply put, the .350 Legend provides those who prefer traditional, simple designs and modern designs with a reliable and potent cartridge.
The cartridge was specifically designed to be capable of achieving consistent and human lethal hits on large deer at distances out to about 200 yards. This range can be extended to a maximum effective distance of about 250 yards with the right loading. In addition to deer and deer sized game, the cartridge is also suitable for a variety of game such as coyote, hog, and black bear.
The wide range of hunting loadings available for the .350 Legend round allow it to be optimal different types of game. Winchester currently produces .350 Legend ammo in various grain weights such as 150 grain, 160 grain, and 180 grain loadings. These types of loadings feature a variety of projectiles such as hollow point and soft point style bullets which are well-suited for hunting applications.
When it comes to hunting, regardless of the caliber, one should ensure that they are utilizing proper ammunition, firearms, equipment, and practices to ensure an effective hunt. Not only does one optimize their hunt, but one also ensures that any game dispatched is taken ethically and humanely. All in all, the .350 Legend will be more than adequate for a variety of hunters and their purposes.
At this point in time, .350 Legend ammo somewhat limited when it comes to availability of ammunition. This is in part due to the fact that the cartridge is still relatively new and support from the industry is still growing over time. That being said, it is not an impossible task by any means to acquire .350 Legend ammunition. Various companies are producing loadings for the caliber such as Winchester, Federal, Hornady, Precision One, and Barnes. These ammunition offerings include specialized offerings optimal for use cases such as hunting and suppressed shooting.
While stock of the round may be elusive on store shelves, one may have better luck if they shop for ammo online. By electing to buy ammunition online, one essentially frees themselves from the constraints placed upon them by what is in stock locally. Basically, one will have a wider range of options online as opposed to what is on shelves around them in most cases. This can be particularly helpful if one is trying to locate a specific loading for their particular use case. All in all, while the round may be a bit harder to track down, one will ultimately be able to find .350 Legend ammo if they set their mind to it.
Like .350 Legend ammo, firearms chambered in .350 Legend are somewhat limited as far as availability goes. This is not to say it is hard to find something chambered in .350 Legend, they are just not as common as firearms in more common calibers like 5.56x45mm NATO, .308 Winchester, and 6.5 Creedmoor. Some firearms retailers tend to stock popular, long-standing firearms and calibers exclusively, meaning that newer and more recent products may not be on hand. That being said, one can always inquire about special ordering a firearm or looking online for options.
At this point in time, companies such as Howa, Winchester, Ruger, Savage Arms, and Mossberg produce firearms in the caliber. Additionally, one can find a number of AR-15 manufacturers offering firearms, uppers, and components which support .350 Legend. All in all, if you would like to track down a firearm or build a firearm in .350 Legend, you will be able to. Regardless of whether one prefers traditional designs or modern offerings, one will be able to acquire a .350 Legend firearm suitable for their needs.
