Hey all, we here at True Shot Academy are going to go over Old Army today. The company is a recent addition to the ammunition providers that we stock, so we wanted to provide a bit of information about them. Old Army is a company with a diverse array of product offerings. The company is based in Spokane Valley, Washington and was founded by Jamie Blackhart, an Army veteran with over 30 years of service. While the name “old army” may evoke images of military surplus, new old stock ammunition, this is not the case. This may be due to the prevalence of the term “army surplus” being utilized throughout the years to denote old GI equipment and gear. The ammunition offered by the company is of new manufacture and is not surplus ammunition, meaning shooters are getting fresh ammunition from Old Army.
Currently, Old Army only offers one type of ammunition. This ammo comes in the form of an M193 spec 5.56x45mm NATO loading. As an M193 loading, Old Army Ammo’s 5.56x45mm NATO offering features a 55 grain full metal jacket projectile. These loadings feature sealant to aid in waterproofing the contents of the cartridge and feature distinct crimping around the projectile. This offering is available in the form of individual 20 round boxes and in the bulk ammunition form of a 540 round case.
The 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition sold by Old Army is actually manufactured by ATS Ammunition in Macedonia. ATS has been producing ammunition for over 40 years with a current output of nearly 200 million rounds per year. The company was recently integrated into the NATO Codification System community and currently holds an NCAGE (NATO Commercial and Government Entity) Code. This is to say that ATS is a vetted and accredited producer of ammunition which can be trusted for both military and commercial use.
The 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition offered by Old Army is not corrosive by any means. Old Army’s offering features a non-corrosive Boxer primer, a far cry from the corrosive Berdan primers used by corrosive loadings. While most corrosive loadings feature Berdan primers, it is important to know that not all Berdan primers are corrosive in nature. Though rare, it is also possible for shooters to encounter corrosive Boxer primers. All in all, shooters will not have to worry about corrosion when shooting Old Army Ammo.
Steel casings can be common with imported ammunition. While Old Army 5.56x45mm NATO is imported from Macedonia, it is not of the steel cased variety. Old Army Ammo 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition features newly manufactured CuZn30 formula brass casings. Simply put, Old Army’s ammunition offerings will be of the brass cased variety and do not feature steel casings.
The inclusion of brass casings and Boxer primers makes it easy for one to potentially reload brass recovered from Old Army Ammo offerings. Brass casings are easier to work with than their steel counterparts as they are more malleable and are easier on tools. The use of Boxer primers also makes it easier for one to reload as Boxer primers follow standardized sizing specifications. Simply put, one will be able to reload Old Army Ammo brass, provided it is in a recoverable and safe condition.
Old Army Ammo can be categorized as range safe ammunition. Many ranges bar the use of steel core ammo due to the potential for damage to range fixtures and the chance of fires when outdoors. Additionally, some ranges disallow the use of steel cased ammunition due to the fact that many steel case loadings feature steel core projectiles. This can be the case whether or not the projectile actually is steel, leading to some ammunition being turned away just on the basis of steel casings. Old Army Ammo’s offerings feature lead core projectiles, making them suitable for use at all ranges. The 5.56x45mm NATO ammo offered by Old Army will not attract a magnet, further demonstrating its range safe status. All in all, one will be able to shoot this ammo worry free at any range.
All in all, the 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition offered by Old Army represents a great value for shooters.
