About 5.7x28mm Ammunition

The 5.7x28mm cartridge is the product of FN Herstal’s response to a NATO request to replace the 9mm Luger. While new cartridges are typically derived from an existing cartridge, the 5.7x28mm was designed from scratch from the ground up by FN Herstal. The cartridge is of the bottlenecked variety and will typically feature a lightweight projectile. When compared to the 9mm Luger it was intended to replace, the 5.7x28mm features roughly 30% less recoil. The high velocity of the round also aids in ensuring that a flat trajectory is achieved. The 5.7x28mm features a very controllable recoil impulse that is paired with a loud report and substantial muzzle flash when fired from a handgun or short barrel. While longer than typical handgun calibers, the 5.7x28mm is slim and has a relatively efficient form factor. This means that magazines for the caliber will often have a considerable ammunition capacity.

Types of 5.7x28mm Loadings

  • Full Metal Jacket (FMJ): Like the name suggests, these types of loadings feature projectiles which are adorned with metal jacketing. This jacket is generally made of copper and will cover the tip and sides of the projectile. Typically, the base of the projectile is left uncoated. These types of loadings are well-suited for range use and are some of the most common types of ammo one will encounter.
  • Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP): JHP loadings feature hollow point projectiles which are adorned with a full metal jacket. These loadings are generally found in the form of defensive ammo offerings and are designed to facilitate reliable expansion upon impact. Additionally, these types of loadings are designed to achieve adequate levels of penetration for defensive purposes while not over penetrating the target and risking collateral damage. A good hollow point loading is one that achieves an appropriate level of penetration while expanding reliably upon impact within the target.
  • Hollow Point (HP): HP loadings feature hollow point projectiles like the name suggests. This removal of material makes the projectile lighter and promotes high velocities. These types of loadings are optimized for self defense or match use and have a tendency to expand on impact. A good hollow point loading is one that achieves an appropriate level of penetration while expanding reliably upon impact within the target.
  • Polymer Tip: Polymer tip projectiles can be common on a variety of loadings across many calibers. Typically, polymer tips accompany a hollow, open pocket which sits below the tip in the projectile. On impact, some polymer tip loadings are designed to expand as the tip presses back against the lead core. Polymer tips are also often utilized to achieve higher velocities and provide better ballistic capabilities to some cartridges. Many calibers which were limited to flat point and round nose style loadings have been granted better velocity due to polymer tips.
  • Total Metal Jacket (TMJ): These types of loadings feature projectiles which are entirely and completely enclosed within a metal jacket. TMJ loadings differ from FMJ loadings as they feature projectiles which are completely enclosed. In most cases, this jacketing is copper and is applied via electroplating. These loadings notably reduce the amount of lead one is exposed to during the firing process, specifically due to the elimination of an exposed lead projectile base. Also referred to as TMC, or Total Metal Case loadings by some manufacturers.

Firearms that Use 5.7x28mm Ammo

Currently, there is a growing number of 5.7x28mm chambered firearms on the market. Initially, firearm support for the cartridge was limited to the commercial offerings from FN. As time progressed, more offerings became available as other firearm manufacturers began to support the cartridge. Both pistols and long guns can be found in the 5.7x28mm chambering. At the end of the day, one will not have an issue finding something chambered in 5.7x28mm if they truly want to get something in the caliber.
