About Ammo Cans

Hey all, we here at True Shot Academy wanted to talk all about ammo cans. These affordable and neat storage solutions are of great benefits to shooters of all skill levels. Our goal here is to briefly go over ammo cans while touching on some of their traits and uses. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Efficient Storage Solution

Ammo cans, like the name suggests, are highly efficient for storing quantities of ammunition. This is due to their interior dimensions and the fact that they are often stackable. The stackable nature of ammo cans allows one to neatly store large quantities of ammunition. Ammo cans are generally more efficient storage solutions than the cases which often contain bulk ammunition. For example, a .50 cal ammo can will hold 1,200 loose rounds of 5.56x45mm NATO while a .30 cal can will hold 1,200 rounds of 9mm Luger. It should be noted that these two calibers in this quantity when stored in these sized ammo cans are going to be smaller than their case counterparts. By utilizing ammo cans, one can dispose of cardboard clutter and have a neater storage solution capable of holding more ammunition.

Different Types of Ammo Cans

Generally, when one pictures an ammo can, they picture a worn, green military surplus one. While these surplus offerings are quite prevalent and commonly used, one can also find newly manufactured ammo cans in both plastic and metal form. The plastic type ammo cans are offered from a variety of manufacturers such as MTM and come in many shapes and sizes. The newly metal type ammo cans tend to mirror the G.I. spec ones often found in surplus form. Ammo Cans Purchase Ammo

Are Ammo Cans Waterproof/Watertight?

Ammo cans in both plastic and metal form generally have a rubber o-ring or gasket inside the lid. This helps to seal the contents of the cans from dust and moisture. Conventional metal ammo cans in the G.I. style will protect their contents from moisture but should not be submerged. Generally, one should avoid submerging their ammunition storage solutions if they can help it. While it should be avoided, some examples do exist which are certified as being able to endure submersion. An example of a case of this type would be the NANUK 908 Waterproof Ammo Case which boasts certifications which tout its ability to endure submersion up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.

Are Ammo Cans Fireproof?

Obviously, this conversation is going to focus on the non-plastic ammo can variants. Metal ammo cans are going to be more resistant to heat and potential fire damage than their plastic counterparts, but they are not fireproof by any means. Like many of the safes on the market, some metal ammo cans may resist fire for a certain amount of time before significant damage occurs to the container. However, there are more things to consider with ammo cans storing live ammunition. If enough consistent heat is applied to the ammo can, it will essentially act like a Dutch oven and cook its contents. If there is live ammunition in the can during a fire, it is liable to go off. Put simply, it is also worth considering the contents in the ammo can when it comes to storage or enduring hardship. So long story short, ammo cans are not fireproof, even though they may be resistant to fire to a certain point.

Are Ammo Cans Lockable?

Most ammo cans are lockable. Some of the plastic ammo cans on the market feature locking tab holes in their lids allowing one to use a simple style lock. A variety of locking mechanisms can be utilized to lock ammo cans of the metal variety. One can find locks purpose-built for use on metal, G.I. style ammo cans which turn them into lockable storage devices. By adding a lock to your ammo can, you can ensure that the container is relatively tamper proof. It should also be noted that if someone really wanted to get into one of these ammo cans, locked or not, they could do so with tools. There are certainly more secure and stationary methods for storing valuables and sensitive items, but a locked ammo can will certainly help deter prying fingers.

Other Uses for Ammo Cans?

Beyond ammunition storage, one can utilize ammo cans for a variety of different uses. The different sizes of ammo cans available make them versatile storage solutions for a variety of cargo. If one had a smaller, .30 cal style ammunition can, one could use this to store something such as spare batteries for their optics and flashlights. A larger variant can easily contain medical supplies or tools. At the end of the day, ammo cans are incredibly versatile storage solutions. Purchase Ammo

Where Can You Get Ammo Cans?

Ammo cans can be acquired from a variety of sources. Sometimes, ammunition can be purchased in ammo cans, both in plastic and metal form. Obviously, once the ammunition is taken out of it, this ammo can is able to be filled with anything. Most major retailers in the firearms industry and places like hardware stores offer ammo cans. Of course, you can always go with a surplus ammo can to save some money if you don’t mind a rugged and worn metal ammo can. These types of ammo cans can generally be found at military surplus stores among other treasures.

Are Ammo Cans Worth It?

Ammo cans are worth it if you want to get into a versatile storage solution. Whether you’re storing ammunition or something else, they are a neat and efficient way to keep your belongings safe and organized. We here at True Shot occasionally get empty ammo cans in for sale and typically sell ammunition that comes in ammo cans. As always, we are here to help you with your ammunition needs. Happy shooting.
