The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, or .22 WMR, was introduced by Winchester in 1959. This rimfire cartridge is known for its higher velocity and greater energy compared to other .22 caliber rounds, making it popular for hunting small game and varmints, as well as for target shooting and plinking.The cartridge is also well-suited for use in a variety of firearms, especially those of the semi-automatic variety. Types of 22 WMR Loadings

• Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP): JHP loadings feature hollow point projectiles which are adorned with a full metal jacket. Additionally, these types of loadings are designed to achieve adequate levels of penetration for defensive purposes while not over penetrating the target and risking collateral damage. A good hollow point loading is one that achieves an appropriate level of penetration while expanding reliably upon impact within the target.
• Hollow Point (HP): HP loadings feature hollow point projectiles like the name suggests. This removal of material makes the projectile lighter and promotes high velocities. These types of loadings are optimized for self defense or match use and have a tendency to expand on impact. A good hollow point loading is one that achieves an appropriate level of penetration while expanding reliably upon impact within the target.
• Total Metal Jacket (TMJ): These types of loadings feature projectiles which are entirely and completely enclosed within a metal jacket. TMJ loadings differ from FMJ loadings as they feature projectiles which are completely enclosed. In most cases, this jacketing is copper and is applied via electroplating. These loadings notably reduce the amount of lead one is exposed to during the firing process, specifically due to the elimination of an exposed lead projectile base. Also referred to as TMC, or Total Metal Case loadings by some manufacturers.
• Semi Jacketed Soft Point (SJSP): Loadings of this type are often simply called JSP, or jacketed soft point loadings. These types of loadings feature projectiles with jacketing which does not fully cover the entire bullet. Typically, these loadings have flat or round nose projectiles which extend beyond the jacketing of the bullet. These loadings tend to make for good general-purpose ammunition.

22 WMR Interchangeability

The .22 Magnum cartridge is not directly interchangeable with any other calibers. The dimensions of the cartridge ensure that it cannot be chambered in an incompatible firearm. Some specific firearms, such as Ruger’s Single-Six revolvers will be able to accommodate both .22 Long Rifle and .22 Magnum ammunition. These firearms feature .22 bores and accommodate specific cylinders for .22 Long Rifle and .22 Magnum use. These types of revolvers are referred to as “convertible” models and allow for one to take advantage of two calibers in one firearm.
