  • 9mm:The 9mm Luger cartridge is easily the most common handgun round in common use. The caliber goes by many names, often being referred to as 9mm NATO, 9mm Parabellum, 9x19mm, or just generically β€œ9mm”. The cartridge’s origins can be traced back to the early 20th century and is the brainchild of Georg Luger. Originally found in firearms such as the Borchardt C-93 and the P-08 Luger pistol, the round has become a common chambering for handguns in civilian and military use from the 20th century onward. Firearms such as pistols and submachine guns in 9mm Luger have commonly been used by military and law enforcement personnel across the globe, leading to the round establishing a reputation for being a reliable service cartridge.
  • .22 LR:Arguably one of the most popular calibers in existence, the .22 Long Rifle made its debut in 1887. Introduced a year after the introduction of viable smokeless powder, the .22 Long Rifle quickly took advantage of the benefits of the newer type of propellant. While .22 Short and .22 Long loadings initially used black powder, the smokeless powder utilized by firearms after 1886 made for a more efficient and effective propellant. In a departure from the .22 Long, the .22 Long Rifle is able to reliably function in semi-automatic firearms. Semi-automatic pistols and rifles in .22 Long Rifle are some of the most common firearms owned by shooters in the United States. A firearm in .22 Long Rifle is a β€œfirst gun” for many new shooters and is an excellent caliber to learn with.
  • 10mm:The 10mm Auto, often referred to as 10mm, is a potent handgun cartridge that was introduced in 1983. When compared to standard, non-specialty .357 Magnum loadings, the 10mm Auto is capable of producing higher energies. Specialty 10mm Auto loadings are on par with specialty, high performance .357 Magnum loadings. The cartridge is often compared to the 9mm Luger and .45 ACP as they are common semi-automatic cartridges of the time. The 10mm Auto essentially has high velocities, like 9mm Luger, and larger, heavier projectiles, like .45 ACP, providing shooters with a versatile and capable round. The 10mm Auto will notably have a stout and snappy recoil impulse which is accompanied by flat trajectories.
  • .45 ACP:The .45 ACP, or .45 Automatic Colt Pistol, cartridge is the brainchild of prolific firearm designer John Moses Browning. Originally developed in 1904, the cartridge is closely associated with the 1911 pistol, an iconic service pistol chambered in .45 ACP. Beyond its use in handguns, the cartridge is well-known for being used in submachine guns such as the Thompson and M3 β€œGrease Gun.” The .45 ACP notably served the United States and allied nations throughout both World Wars and in many of the conflicts throughout the 20th century.

Common CCI Bullet Types

  • Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP):JHP loadings feature hollow point projectiles which are adorned with a full metal jacket. These loadings are generally found in the form of defensive ammo offerings and are designed to facilitate reliable expansion upon impact. Additionally, these types of loadings are designed to achieve adequate levels of penetration for defensive purposes while not overpenetrating the target and risking collateral damage. A good hollow point loading is one that achieves an appropriate level of penetration while expanding reliably upon impact within the target.
  • Full Metal Jacket (FMJ):Like the name suggests, these types of loadings feature projectiles which are adorned with metal jacketing. This jacket is generally made of copper and will cover the tip and sides of the projectile. Typically, the base of the projectile is left uncoated. These types of loadings are well-suited for range use and are some of the most common types of ammo one will encounter.
  • V-MAX:Loadings of this type feature a premium, specialty V-MAX projectile from Hornady. These projectiles feature polymer tips and are well-suited to varmint hunting applications. V-MAX loadings are also capable of high velocities and flat trajectories, adding to their potency. Projectiles are designed to expand and fragment on impact, resulting in optimal terminal ballistics in varmint hunting applications.
  • Total Metal Jacket (TMJ): These types of loadings feature projectiles which are entirely and completely enclosed within a metal jacket. TMJ loadings differ from FMJ loadings as they feature projectiles which are completely enclosed. In most cases, this jacketing is copper and is applied via electroplating. These loadings notably reduce the amount of lead one is exposed to during the firing process, specifically due to the elimination of an exposed lead projectile base. Also referred to as TMC, or Total Metal Case loadings by some manufacturers.
