About Mec-Gar
Hey all, we here at True Shot Academy are going to be talking about Mec-Gar. The company is a renowned provider of magazines which has been around since the mid-20th century. Our goal here is to provide a brief overview of the company and some of their product offerings. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
What is Mec-Gar?
Mec-Gar is an Italian-based manufacturer of magazines that was established in 1965. The company has three facilities which product magazines in both Gardonne Val Trompia and Gusago in Brescia, Italy. The United States branch of Mec-Gar is based in Middletown, Connecticut. The company produces a wide variety of magazines, both single stack and double stack, in both OEM and aftermarket form. OEM Magazines
Mec-Gar produces a considerable number of magazines for their OEM customers. These customers are usually firearm manufacturers who trust Mec-Gar to produce magazines for their pistols. Some notable firearm companies which utilize Mec-Gar made magazines are Beretta, CZ, and Sig Sauer among others. Something of note is that the United States Army and other branches that utilize the Sig Sauer M17 and M18 are using magazines made by Mec-Gar.
Aftermarket Magazines
These aftermarket magazines produced by Mec-Gar encompass a wide range of firearms. These aftermarket magazines overlap with some of the models that Mec-Gar produces OEM magazines for. These examples include the Beretta M9/92FS line, CZ-75, and Sig Sauer P226 lines. Firearms beyond this range of products are also covered by the aftermarket magazines produced by Mec-Gar. Notably, the company produces some magazines for pistols which are no longer in production. Examples of these firearms are the P-08 Luger, Smith and Wesson 5900 series, and the Ruger P85 just to name a few. Generally, one can find an aftermarket Mec-Gar version of a pistol’s magazine cheaper than the OEM version that bears the firearm company’s name.
Additional Capacity Options
In addition to producing magazines faithful to the original, intended capacity of a firearm, Mec-Gar also offers magazines with different capacity levels. These additional capacities can either feature more or less rounds than the standard capacity. If one is subjected to magazine restrictions, they can make use of the reduced capacity magazines offered by the company. For example, if one lives in California, they can get a 10 round magazine for their Beretta M9. The company also offers flush-fitting magazines that hold a higher capacity than originally intended. For example, the Sig Sauer P226 features a standard magazine capacity of 15 rounds while Mec-Gar offers an 18 round flush fitting magazine.
Beyond flush fitting magazines that yield additional capacity, Mec-Gar also offers extended magazines. These magazines will either come in the form of a standard magazine with an extension at the bottom or simply feature a longer body to hold more ammunition.
Different Finish Options
Many of the magazines manufactured by Mec-Gar are offered in a variety of finishes. These options include blued, phosphate, and nickel just to name a few. Additionally, one is also able to purchase certain magazines with a black, anti-friction finish to facilitate smoother insertion and removal of the magazine.

IFS Products
The company also offers a number of “Innovation For Shooters”, or IFS, products to enhance an end user’s shooting experience. This line of products includes a number of magazine floorplates. Some of these offerings replace existing metal floorplates with rubber versions while others provide a finger rest, typically made for one’s pinky finger on a smaller pistol. The company also provides a number of floorplates and spring and follower kits which increase the capacity of a given magazine. These floorplate kits can add anywhere from one two four additionally rounds depending on the specific model of firearm. For example, if one were to add one of Mec-Gar’s “Plus-2” adapter sets to an 18 round Beretta M9/92FS magazine, it would increase the capacity of the magazine to 20 rounds.
Another notable product in the IFS line is the company’s Meg-Loader. This product is a universal magazine loader which will comes with a number of inserts to ensure its function with a variety of magazines and calibers. Both single stack and double stack magazines are covered by this tool and one can make use of specific inserts to optimize the loader for their use. The device will cover pistol magazines from 9mm Luger to .45 ACP as well as .22 Long Rifle when the green insert is used. It should be noted that the green insert only works with the Ruger MK series and Browning Buckmark magazines.
Conclusion
All in all, Mec-Gar provides high quality magazines which are trusted by OEM and aftermarket customers alike. If you own a pistol from a major manufacturer that uses metal magazines, there is a good chance you own a magazine made by Mec-Gar. While we here at True Shot currently do not carry Mec-Gar magazines, we wholly endorse their use and recommend them. The brand has become trusted enough by firearms companies to make magazines for their firearms, something which is truly a testament to their quality and consistency. As always, happy shooting.
