We all know the tagline, Glock Perfection. Regardless of where you come down on that, there’s no denying Glock’s popularity among the civilian market, law enforcement, and militaries worldwide.
If you were to ask a lay person what gun comes to mind when they think of handguns, the first words out of their mouth is probably Glock.
Most of us were surprised when Glock lost to Sig in the XM17 Modular Handgun System contract for the military in 2017.
Over the past few days, a whirlwind of photos, videos, and patents have been going around social media and YouTube about the new Glock GR115F carbine. Has Glock just entered the conversation into the AR-15 market? For years, we have seen images of Glock 1911’s and carbines. But all were either elaborate pranks or good Photoshop jobs. But this one has been confirmed - and by Glock no less!
So here is what we know: development and prototypes of this rifle have been rumored since 2016. With some deep internet diving, our friend MrGunsNGear, goes in-depth about the history and patents on this carbine.
The leaked pictures in questions come from a British YouTuber and appears to be part of a replacement trial for the British SA-80 rifle. The carbine is fitted with a 14.5” barrel sporting an OSS suppressor and flash hider. The handguard appears to have the a quick detach feature and is slotted for M-LOK attachments. The color scheme is 50 shades of FDE and Magpul furniture.
So, what does this all mean for the US civilian market?
According to ATF import documents, Glock USA has imported carbine barrels. That has stirred up widespread speculations that Glock is ramping up for a release in the 4th quarter of 2022, just in time for SHOT Show 2023. The official word from Glock is that the GR115F will be available for select solicitations and NOT available for the general public.
So, will we ever see a Glock AR-15 in the US market? As of right now the answer is no. But it would only make sense for Glock to extend a version of the GR115F for the consumer market. With Glock’s impeccable track record of reliability, I think it goes without saying, they would have a hot seller on their hands.
