Hey all, we here at True Shot Academy are going to talk about the 7mm Remington Magnum. The cartridge has been utilized by shooters of many types since its introduction over half a century ago and remains in use today. Our goal today is to provide a brief overview of the cartridge while delving into traits, features, use cases, and more. Now, let’s talk about 7mm Remington Magnum.
The 7mm Remington Magnum, also simply called the 7mm Rem Mag, was introduced by Remington in 1962. The cartridge as a belted magnum and developed from .375 Holland & Holland Magnum cartridges such as .264 Winchester Magnum and .338 Winchester Magnum. Remington’s new cartridge made its debut alongside their new Model 700 bolt action rifle, providing instant support for the new round.
When compared to something like the .308 Winchester, the 7mm Remington Magnum features a more substantial recoil impulse. This recoil impulse is also accompanied by higher velocities and flat trajectories, traits common in magnum rifle calibers. Additionally, the .284” projectiles used in 7mm Rem Mag loadings feature higher sectional densities and penetrative capabilities than .308” diameter bullets. Compared to the .300 Winchester Magnum, the 7mm Remington Magnum is noticeably tamer in terms of recoil. Both magnum cartridges boast excellent ballistic capabilities, effective ranges, and potent effects on target.
Since the cartridge’s introduction in 1962, it has been employed by a variety of end users for many purposes. The cartridge’s versatility has led to it being described as a great all-round or “do-all” cartridge. Of course, recreational target shooting is easily accomplished with the round due to its effectiveness at long ranges and flat trajectories. The cartridge is most commonly employed in hunting applications as it is able to dispatch a wide range of game.
The concept of belted magnum cartridges was ushered in by the .300 Holland & Holland Magnum and .375 Holland & Holland Magnum. Belted magnum cartridges feature sloping shoulders which promote effective and optimal headspacing. Additionally, this geometry promotes reliable and effective cartridge extraction. Smooth cartridge extraction allows an end user to remove spent cartridges and make follow-up shots easily, a trait appreciable by hunters in the field.

Good article on an excellent cartridge. I bought my Remington 7mm mag BDL in 1972, started reloading for it and can shoot 3 shot groups at 100 yards I can completely cover with a dime. Then, years later and several brands of scopes I mounted a Sheppard scope with the 18 inch center and now own a true 1,000 yard rifle that will actually accurately “ring the steel” at twice that. Best investment of all my other weapons, 7mm mag is still a superb choice.
