Popular Ammo Offerings from Norma
- 9mm:The 9mm Luger cartridge is easily the most common handgun round in common use. The caliber goes by many names, often being referred to as 9mm NATO, 9mm Parabellum, 9x19mm, or just generically “9mm”. The cartridge’s origins can be traced back to the early 20th century and is the brainchild of Georg Luger. Originally found in firearms such as the Borchardt C-93 and the P-08 Luger pistol, the round has become a common chambering for handguns in civilian and military use from the 20th century onward. Firearms such as pistols and submachine guns in 9mm Luger have commonly been used by military and law enforcement personnel across the globe, leading to the round establishing a reputation for being a reliable service cartridge.
- 7.62x39:The 7.62×39 cartridge was introduced in 1944 and represents an early intermediate cartridge. While the intermediate 7.92×33 Kurz precedes the 7.62×39, the latter is still in common use today while the other has been completely phased out of conventional usage. The cartridge officially entered service in 1945 and served as the standard issue military cartridge for the Soviets for most of the Cold War, still seeing some limited usage today. Beyond the Soviet Union, countless other countries on nearly every continent have utilized the cartridge in one form or another. This is mainly due to the fact that many surplus firearms worked their way around the globe as newer equipment became available and countries sold off or exported surplus arms.
- .22 LR:Arguably one of the most popular calibers in existence, the .22 Long Rifle made its debut in 1887. Introduced a year after the introduction of viable smokeless powder, the .22 Long Rifle quickly took advantage of the benefits of the newer type of propellant. While .22 Short and .22 Long loadings initially used black powder, the smokeless powder utilized by firearms after 1886 made for a more efficient and effective propellant. In a departure from the .22 Long, the .22 Long Rifle is able to reliably function in semi-automatic firearms. Semi-automatic pistols and rifles in .22 Long Rifle are some of the most common firearms owned by shooters in the United States. A firearm in .22 Long Rifle is a “first gun” for many new shooters and is an excellent caliber to learn with.
- 6.5 Creedmoor:The 6.5 Creedmoor was introduced by Hornady in 2007 and serves as a modern expansion on the concept of a 6mm round. This relatively new cartridge has become increasingly popular in recent years, establishing a solid reputation in both the world of hunting and precision shooting. Like the .243 Win, the 6.5 Creedmoor is also well-known for its light recoil, accuracy, and flat trajectory. The cartridge has garnered attention from law enforcement and military agencies as rifles in the caliber have been tested and employed in marksman and sniper type roles.
Common Norma Bullet Types
- Full Metal Jacket (FMJ): Like the name suggests, these types of loadings feature projectiles which are adorned with metal jacketing. This jacket is generally made of copper and will cover the tip and sides of the projectile. Typically, the base of the projectile is left uncoated. These types of loadings are well-suited for range use and are some of the most common types of ammo one will encounter.
- Frangible:Frangible ammunition is different from traditional ammunition due to the fact that projectiles fragment and essentially disintegrate when they impact something hard. Rather than being composed of lead, frangible projectiles typically consist of a mixture of powdered metals. Common powdered metals utilized for frangible projectiles include tin, copper, zinc, or tungsten. Typically, frangible ammunition will have lighter grain weights than their traditional counterparts. Frangible ammunition can be found in a variety of popular rifle and pistol calibers, particularly those commonly associated with duty use.
- Hollow Point (HP):HP loadings feature hollow point projectiles like the name suggests. This removal of material makes the projectile lighter and promotes high velocities. These types of loadings are optimized for self defense or match use and have a tendency to expand on impact. A good hollow point loading is one that achieves an appropriate level of penetration while expanding reliably upon impact within the target.
- Pointed Soft Point (PSP):Like traditional SP loadings, PSP loadings are designed to rapidly expand upon impact, making them optimal for hunting usage. The key difference between SP and PSP loadings is the key term “pointed.” The addition of a distinct point in these projectiles allows for flat trajectories and a greater accuracy potential. Additionally, pointed projectiles are going to have a greater velocity potential than their rounded counterparts.
